College Theme 2012: Out of sight, out of mind? Homelessness and Mental Health
The College of Psychiatrists has many commitments in training, professional competence and public awareness. A considerable amount of work is achieved annually through its faculties and committees. The College Council has chosen to focus some of that work on a particular theme within mental health services. For 2012, that theme was Homelessness and Mental Illness.
Homelessness, the College Theme for 2012 was launched at the College of Psychiatrist’s AGM on Friday, 27th January, 2012. Speaking at the College’s AGM, Dr Joanne Fenton, a Consultant Psychiatrist who works with homeless people, said the true prevalence of mental health problems in the homeless population is unknown but that estimates show that up to one in four homeless people can have severe mental health issues.
Homeless people find it difficult to access the health and social care they need and facebarriers, such as lack of finances, lack of understanding of state entitlements and stigma, inhaving their needs met.
