Psychiatrist awarded 2016 Dr Richard Steeven’s Fellowship

Dr Eric Kelleher, senior registrar in liaison psychiatry at St James’ Hospital and former Chairperson of the Trainee Committee within the College of Psychiatrists was awarded the 2016 Dr Richard Steevens’ fellowship.

The Scholarship was developed and established by the HSE in 2007 and recognises specialist / senior registrars with strong track records in achievement. To date, thirty nine doctors have been awarded Scholarships with an additional fifteen awarded bursaries under the programme. The Scholarship helps doctors to work abroad in centres of excellence in sub specialist areas of medicine and healthcare that are either limited or not available at all in Ireland with a view to them returning home with their new experience and skill-set to enhance the quality of care provided here.

Dr Kelleher will undertake a fellowship in Neuropsychiatry including unexplained neurological symptoms at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. This is an international referral centre for every form of neurological and neurosurgical disease and has an extensive, well developed neuropsychiatry service, delivered by leaders in the field.  Dr Kelleher will train in the assessment and treatment of these often complex cases with a view to bringing this skill set back to the Irish healthcare system.
