“Hot Topics in Psychiatry” Concludes Two Successful Events

The ‘Hot Topics in Psychiatry’ series of events aims to address the ‘Hot’ issues facing psychiatrists in clinical practice.

Psychiatric Advance Directives and Mental Capacity and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, with Dr Enda Dooley (Assistant Inspector of Mental Health in the Mental Health Commission) and Prof Brendan Kelly (Professor of Psychiatry TCD) featured at the first Hot Topics meeting in the current series on Thursday evening 15^th September. The series continued last Thursday 20^th October with presentations on Neuropsychiatric Complications of Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Services for Acquired Brain Injury and the Interface with Psychiatry. The series will feature five more events in the Ashling Hotel in Dublin City Centre.

The College of Psychiatrists is delighted to relaunch Hot Topics following its previous success. The meetings have attracted the attention of not only Psychiatrists but also clinicians from other medical specialities, offering a good cross section of interest to all who attend. 

Director of Professional Competence, Dr Miriam Kennedy says:

“Hot Topics in Psychiatry gives Psychiatrists an option to maintain their professional competence without interrupting our already hectic work schedule. It also allows us to do so while being informed of best practices and evidence-based approaches to treatments, with a focus on service improvements that directly benefit our patients. Feedback indicates the frank sharing amongst peers of pressing issues in clinical practice has been particularly helpful”.

The format of Two Speakers, Two CPD Credits, One Thursday per month has proven hugely popular amongst psychiatrists who may find it difficult to get cover or leave to attend CPD meetings. These meetings offer psychiatrists an easy way to accrue external credits each month while attending brief, relevant, interesting updates outside of normal working hours. The events also present an excellent opportunity for peer to peer engagement, with topics suggested by consultants aiming to make them as relevant as possible. A limited number of places are available at every Hot Topics event for other medical specialists.
