AFFILIATED MEMBERSHIP
Student Membership
If you are an undergraduate medical student in the EU with an interest in psychiatry, you can become a student member free of charge for the duration of your degree.
Reasons to become a member

Intern Membership
If you are a newly qualified doctor registered on the internship register of the Irish Medical Council, you can become a member of the College free of charge for the duration of your internship year.

Pre-Exam Trainee Membership
Pre-Exam Trainee membership is available for doctors who are registered on the Basic Specialist Training Scheme in psychiatry and have not yet completed the Basic Specialist Training Clinical Membership Exam.
All trainees who are registered on the Basic Specialist Training Scheme with the College can become a Pre-Exam Trainee member. This enables BST trainees to access the benefits of membership before they complete their BST Clinical Examination to become full members of the College.

How to apply
BST Trainees can register to become a Pre-Exam Trainee member by completing the membership application form.
Affiliate Membership
Affiliate Membership is available to all doctors working in psychiatry who are on the General or Supervised division of the Irish Medical Council Register, are not in an approved training post and have not completed the Irish Clinical Membership Exam.
Affiliate members should be registered on the Professional Competence Scheme with the College which is separate to membership. For information on the Professional Competence Scheme, click here.
Affiliate membership allows NCHD’s who work in psychiatry but are not in training to access the benefits of membership outlined below:

NCHDs not in training can register to become an Affiliate member by completing the membership application form.
Associate Membership
Associate membership is available to psychiatrists who are not registered with the medical council in Ireland, who are working and residing outside of the Republic of Ireland and may benefit from the educational activities of the College.*
*Doctors who have completed the BST Clinical Examination but no longer reside in Ireland are eligible to apply for Post-Exam Membership. Psychiatrists who completed their training in Ireland but no longer reside in the country are eligible to apply for Full Specialist Membership.

Doctors who are eligible for Associate membership can apply for membership by completing the online application form.
FULL MEMBERSHIP
Full membership of the College is available to all doctors who are eligible for one of the following four categories of membership. Those eligible for full membership must have passed the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam from July 2011 or MRCPsych (or equivalent) prior to July 2011.
Post-Exam Membership
Post-Exam Membership is available to all non-consultant psychiatrists (NCHDs) working in Ireland who are on the Trainee or General Register of the Irish Medical Council and who have successfully completed the CPsychI Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam or an equivalent examination*
*Equivalent Membership exams – MRCPsych, ABPN or RANZCP.

- The right to use the post-nominal Member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, MCPsychI after your name, and to describe yourself as a member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland.

Full Specialist Membership
Full Specialist membership applies to psychiatrists working in Ireland who have completed their training in psychiatry and are eligible for the Specialist Division of the Medical Register. All Educational Supervisors and tutors must be Full Specialist members of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, be on the Specialist Register and be PCS compliant.

General membership applies to consultant psychiatrists working in Ireland who have completed the CPsychI Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam or equivalent and are on the general register of the Irish Medical Council.

Retired Membership
Retired Membership is available only to those psychiatrists who are fully retired, no longer clinically active and are no longer on the Medical Register in Ireland.
Retired members are entitled to the benefits of membership that apply to the category of membership applicable to them before they retired. Retired membership is free of charge and is available to current and previous members of the College.
